Each academic year the Department of Black Studies offers awards to honor the scholarship, community work, and dedication to the field of Black Studies of UIC undergraduate and graduate students through a series of scholarships.

In honor of the our founder, Grace Holt, the Department of Black Studies selects two students each year who have shown a commitment to the field of Black Studies and issues of racial justice.

The Marie Nesbitt Promise Prize Heading link
The Department’s faculty selects one undergraduate major or minor in Black Studies each year to recognize their academic achievement. The student awarded the Marie Nesbitt Promise Prize attends the annual Change Create Transform Foundation Summit.
