John West Jr is a West Englewood based multidisciplinary artists (dj/photographer/poet) and high school teacher bridging the sounds of Black Diasporic music with Black historical memory. John is a Ph.D. student in Criminology, Law, and Justice at UIC studying Black Chicago cultural production, fugitive educational ecologies, and the Black radical tradition. Utilizing Abolition, Performance Studies, Critical Race Theory, Afro-pessimism, and Black Queer Feminists Theory, my research attempts to address the question: What are the conditions of possibility for black education, joy, and resistance during a time that many scholars call the nadir of black life in the U.S.?
Research Interests: Black Chicago Studies, Spatiality and Spatial Production, Afro-pessimism, Black fugitive realities, Critical Criminology, Race, Place, and Schooling, Abolition and Alternatives to Incarceration, Photography as Method, Hip-Hop Cultural Production
