Students Awarded Departmental and Grace Holt Awards
Taelar Scott, Ethalle Thompson, and Katie Speth have been awarded by the Department of African American Studies for their academic achievement and service in relation to African American lives.
Scott is a senior in African American Studies and Applied Psychology. In April 2016, she started Love Your Sister (LYS) which aims to create a bond of sisterhood and to diversify young black girls' lives. She has also interned with the Better Boys Foundation (BBF) in North Lawndale.
Thompson is a senior public health major and minor in African American Studies. She has served community events at Eden Place Nature Center for years. She also currently works with CHECK, an organization that addresses health disparities in black communities.
Speth is a major in African American Studies and minor in Crimonology, LAw & Justice. She works at Curt's Cafe, a non-profit organization in Evanston that promotes using funds from food service to support the job training and life skills development of an at-risk youth demographic consisting of primarily African American young men.
