Favelas’ Diary: Black Women Telling Their Own Stories and Creating Their Own Narratives
Brazilian favelas and their particularities have caught the world’s attention. However, quite often, the stories aren’t told by the ones who live in and survive the reality of the favelas. This conversation will explore and uplift these perspectives and realities through the writings in Carolina Maria de Jesus’ diary and through the character of Rosemary Mendonca in the documentary Good Morning, Rocinha. During this exploration, we will ponder the effects of racism and gendered racism on Black women’s stories and bodies.
