Democracy and Higher Education Equity: The Black Student Movement and Affirmative Action
This conversation will focus on Richer’s analysis of the contribution of the Black student movement in the construction of affirmative action in higher education between the years of 1993 to 2024. Participants will examine how black students contributed to approving and defending these initiatives.
Punishment and Labor on the Prison System: The Resocialization Politics on the Maranhão Prison’s System
This presentation will explore how the work and education politics at the Maranhão Prison walk side by side with precarization and new forms of labor. Barbosa will highlight data provided by the State Department of Penitentiary Administration of Maranhão (SEAP-MA) along with interviews with operators of Maranhão resocialization programs.

About the Speakers
Rodger Richer is a Research Assistant and Consultant at the University of Illinois Chicago. He is a Ph.D. student and earned master’s degree in Political Science at the State University of Campinas. He received his B.A. degree in Social Sciences at the Federal University of Bahia.
Luana Barbosa is a PhD student in Political Science at the University of Campinas. She got her Master's in Political Science and graduated in Social Sciences and Pedagogy. She is an Implementation and Development Analyst at Itaú Foundation and works on youth rights, race and education agenda.
